This 25-min educational video documentary introduces the practice of participatory spatial information management and communication (PGIS) in the development context. It has been designed to introduce development practitioners (technology intermediaries) to the practice of demand-driven PGIS.

In this video, PGIS practice is presented as a continuum starting from community mobilisation to project planning and design, choice of mapping methods and technologies, visualisation of different technologies in diverse ethno-cultural and agro-ecological environments, and finally putting the maps to work in the domains of identity building, self-determination, spatial planning and advocacy.

Ethics and sound attitudes and behaviours are emphasized as cross-cutting imperatives.

As part of the Clean Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchase Program, the state of Ohio will assist farmers if the agree to place their land in conservation easement, meaning it cannot be sold to developers. The Licking County Soil and Water Conservation District is working directly with farmers to help them see if their lands qualify for support through the statewide program and act as sponsors.

To be eligible, farmland must meet certain criteria, including;

development pressure (a moderate amount is desirable)

the quality of the soil

the proximity of other farms protected by farm preservation agreements

the utilization of soil conservation and other “best management” practices

Most of these criteria can be evaluated using a GIS (geographic information system) to quickly identify whether a piece of land meets the criteria. Further, a statewide program could help the state or local working lands organizations identify potential candidates for the program. A progressive minded developer could also use the criteria to identify areas where development would be of limited detriment to working lands and open space within the community to ensure they are being thoughtful in where to build.

The Nature Conservancy recently announced some new web maps and map services available at http://maps.tnc.org/.

TNC is highlighting map services for their core conservation data (ecoregional assessments & portfolio, conservation projects, and TNC lands), but they are also hosting many more from around the world. The map services are available for users of ArcGIS, Google Earth, and ArcGIS Explorer, and web map authors can access the services either as WMS or ArcGIS Server 9.3 formats.

All in all, this is pretty cool that we can all easily access these up-to-date resources direct from TNC. This is something we’d like to be seeing coming from government datasets and from other non-profits.
