We’ve been working with SkyTruth to help monitor the Deepwater Horizon blowout. For our part, we’re primarily working to provide third party data archiving. What’s that mean? We have built a few custom scripts to automatically check for new versions of spatial data related to the Deepwater Horizon blowout and store those on our own servers. This helps Skytruth by handling the data acquisition and conversion to usable spatial formats and store the archive for future reference.
It’s not glamorous or highly technical work but we appreciate the opportunity to help out where we can. Further, the process has given us a great opportunity to play with a variety of open-source geospatial tools like GeoServer, Map Server, Quantum GIS, PostGIS and others.
